Premature ejaculation

Racing to the finish? Slow down.

Premature ejaculation (PE) is a common sexual health issue where ejaculation happens sooner than desired, either before or shortly after sexual penetration, causing distress or relationship problems. It can stem from psychological factors such as anxiety or stress, physiological factors, or a combination of both. Addressing PE often involves a combination of behavioral techniques, counseling, and in some cases, medication.

Access Telehealth offers a confidential and accessible way to consult with healthcare providers experienced in sexual health. Through virtual appointments, you can discuss your situation in a private setting, explore underlying causes, and develop a personalized treatment plan that may include exercises, therapy, and medication if necessary. This approach ensures you receive the support and treatment you need for PE from the comfort and privacy of your home.

Precautions

  • Practice pelvic floor exercises, also known as Kegel exercises, to strengthen the muscles that control ejaculation.
  • Try the start-stop technique during sexual activity, where you pause or slow down stimulation when you feel close to ejaculation, then resume when the sensation subsides.
  • Experiment with different positions or techniques that may help delay ejaculation, such as focusing on pleasuring your partner first or using thicker condoms to reduce sensitivity.

Common Medications

  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as sertraline (Zoloft), paroxetine (Paxil), or fluoxetine (Prozac)
  • Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) such as clomipramine (Anafranil)
  • Topical anesthetics such as lidocaine/prilocaine cream (EMLA) or lidocaine spray (Promescent)
