Insomnia

Can't sleep? Nights feeling endless?

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or obtaining restorative sleep, leading to daytime fatigue, impaired performance, and mood disturbances. It can be triggered by stress, lifestyle choices, medical conditions, or medications. Effective management of insomnia requires a comprehensive approach that may include lifestyle modifications, behavioral therapy, and, in some cases, medication.

Access Telehealth provides an accessible route to consult with healthcare providers about your insomnia. Through virtual appointments, you can discuss your symptoms, explore underlying causes, and develop a personalized treatment plan to improve your sleep quality and overall well-being, all from the convenience of your home.

Precautions

  • Establish a consistent sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same times every day, even on weekends. This can help regulate your body's internal clock and improve the quality of your sleep.
  • Create a bedtime routine to signal to your body that it's time to wind down. This can include activities like reading, taking a warm bath, or practicing relaxation exercises such as deep breathing or meditation.
  • Make your sleeping environment comfortable and conducive to sleep. Keep your bedroom dark, quiet, and cool, and invest in a comfortable mattress and pillows. Limit exposure to screens from TVs, computers, and smartphones at least an hour before bedtime, as the blue light emitted can interfere with your ability to fall asleep.

Common Medications

  • Benzodiazepines such as temazepam (Restoril) or triazolam (Halcion)
  • Non-benzodiazepine hypnotics such as zolpidem (Ambien) or eszopiclone (Lunesta)
  • Melatonin receptor agonists such as ramelteon (Rozerem)
