Gastroenteritis

Stomach upset turning your day upside down?

Gastroenteritis, often referred to as stomach flu, is an inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract involving the stomach and intestines. It is typically caused by viral, bacterial, or parasitic infections and is characterized by symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and fever. These symptoms can lead to dehydration, which may require careful management. Treatment focuses on staying hydrated, resting, and, in some cases, taking medication to alleviate symptoms.

Access Telehealth provides a convenient way to seek advice and treatment for gastroenteritis. Through virtual consultations, healthcare providers can assess your symptoms, recommend appropriate treatment strategies such as rehydration solutions or antiemetic medications, and provide guidance on dietary adjustments to help you recover comfortably at home.

Precautions

  • Stay hydrated. Gastroenteritis can lead to dehydration, especially if you're experiencing vomiting or diarrhea. Sip on clear fluids, such as water, broth, or oral rehydration solutions, to replace lost fluids and electrolytes.
  • Gradually reintroduce food. Start with bland, easy-to-digest foods like toast, rice, bananas, and applesauce once you feel you can keep food down. Avoid dairy, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and fatty or highly seasoned foods until you're fully recovered.
  • Rest. Your body needs energy to fight off the infection, so ensure you get plenty of rest. Avoid strenuous activities until you're feeling better.

Common Medications

  • Antiemetics such as ondansetron (Zofran) or promethazine (Phenergan)
  • Antidiarrheal medications such as loperamide (Imodium) or bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol)
  • Antispasmodics such as dicyclomine (Bentyl)
