Bacterial vaginosis

Discomfort down there? Seek balance.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common condition caused by an imbalance of the natural bacteria in the vagina. Symptoms may include a thin, gray, or white vaginal discharge with a fishy odor, vaginal itching, and burning during urination. Although BV can sometimes resolve on its own, it can lead to more serious health risks if left untreated, including increased susceptibility to STIs and complications during pregnancy. Treatment typically involves antibiotics, either in oral or topical form.

Access Telehealth provides a discreet and accessible way to consult with healthcare providers about symptoms of bacterial vaginosis. Through virtual consultations, you can discuss your symptoms, receive a diagnosis, and get prescribed treatment to restore the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina, all from the privacy and convenience of your home.

Precautions

  • Practice good vaginal hygiene by washing the external genital area with mild, unscented soap and water. Avoid douching, as it can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina and potentially worsen the condition.
  • Consider probiotics, either in supplement form or through probiotic-rich foods like yogurt. Probiotics can help restore the natural balance of bacteria in your body, including the vaginal flora.
  • Wear cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothing to allow the area to breathe. This can help keep the vagina dry and reduce the conditions that promote the overgrowth of harmful bacteria.

Common Medications

  • Antibiotics such as Metronidazole (Flagyl) - oral tablets or gel, Clindamycin (Cleocin) - oral capsules or vaginal cream, or Tinidazole (Tindamax) - oral tablets
  • Intravaginal treatments such as Metronidazole (Flagyl) vaginal gel or Clindamycin (Cleocin) vaginal cream
  • Probiotics such as Lactobacillus-containing supplements or yogurt may help restore healthy vaginal flora
