Emergency contraception
Unexpected situation? Timely solutions exist.
Emergency contraception is a method used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure, such as a broken condom. It's available in two main forms: emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) and the copper intrauterine device (IUD). ECPs work best when taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse, ideally within 72 hours but some types can be effective up to 5 days later. The copper IUD, when inserted up to 5 days after unprotected sex, can also serve as a long-term contraceptive method. Emergency contraception is not intended as a regular method of birth control but as a backup option.
Access Telehealth provides a quick and private way to consult with healthcare providers about emergency contraception. Through virtual consultations, you can discuss your situation, receive guidance on the most appropriate emergency contraception method, and in some cases, obtain a prescription for ECPs or referral for an IUD insertion, helping you make timely decisions to prevent unwanted pregnancy, all from the comfort and confidentiality of your home.
Precautions
- Over-the-counter (OTC) emergency contraceptive pills are available at pharmacies, drugstores, and sometimes supermarkets or online. The most common type, often referred to as the "morning-after pill," works best when taken as soon as possible within 72 hours after unprotected sex.
- Another form of EC is the copper IUD, which can be inserted by a healthcare professional up to 5 days after unprotected sex. While this requires a visit to a clinic, it's the most effective form of emergency contraception and can also serve as long-term birth control.
